Guide to Understanding and Providing
Public Access to Connecticut's Coast

Nicole Vickey
Connecticut's coastline is one of the most densely populated in the nation, with about 3,235 people per square mile of shore. Yet 80% of the shoreline is privately owned. This pocket-sized, 18-page booklet is intended to serve as a guide for town planners and municipal officials. Topics include the public trust doctrine, the importance of status of public access to coastal areas in Connecticut, and steps that should be taken in planning such access. It includes definitions of relevant terminology, contacts for coastal zone management information, a discussion of the legal "takings" issue, and the difference between lateral access and perpindicular access. There is also a reference list for further reading.

FISHERIES & SEAFOOD

An Evaluation of the Georges River Shellfish Managment Committee: an Enduring Co-management Experience

S.A. Ebbin and R.S. Pomeroy
In 1996, shellfish harvesters, municipal selectman and other stakeholders from five towns in the mid-coast of Maine formed the Georges River Shellfish Management Program. The resulting Shellfish Committee and Joint Board of Selectmen have managed the soft-shell clam fishery for over ten years. We initiated a research project to evaluate the effectiveness of this cooperative initiative. We found a general consensus that the Shellfish Committee has performed its management functions well and that management has improved compared to prior efforts.  This research report may serve as a model for other communities.  21 pp.  Electronic copy only.  Available for free download as PDF.  DOWNLOAD  (644 KB)

Ecosystem-based Fisheries Management
Dr. Robert Pomeroy
Conventional fisheries management focuses on a single species or stock and may assume that the productivity of that stock is a function only of its inherent population characteristics. Ecosystem-based management strategies recognize that both natural and human elements in the ecosystem must be taken into account in order to really understand fisheries. CTSG-05-01.

Lobster Fact Sheets

What’s Happening to the Lobsters in Long Island Sound?
M. Van Patten and R. French
In 1999, massive mortalities occurred in Long Island Sound lobsters, decimating the population and hurting the lobster industry. A mysterious pathogen, Paramoeba, was discovered by UCONN pathobiologists. The paramoeba caused lobsters from western parts of the Sound to become lethargic and quickly die. Meanwhile, shell disease was affecting lobsters in the eastern Sound. The big question is, could the paramoeba alone have caused the massive die-off, or were the infected lobsters already weakened by other causes? This fact sheet can serve as a "primer", describing various types of lobster diseases known. Illustrated, with color photos. 1-page, double-sided. Published in 1999. Click here for PDF

Frequently Asked Questions about lobsters in Long Island Sound.
1999. This fact sheet complements Number One, above, by answering questions that people frequently ask, such as, Can lobsters with paramoeba, or shell disease be safely eaten? can humans catch the lobster diseases? and more. 1-page, double sided.
