Avery Point Staff receive Apex Awards for Excellence in Publications
Margaret Van Patten, Connecticut Sea Grant Communications Director, and Connecticut Sea Grant have received an Award of Excellence in the One-of-a-Kind Print category, in the national Apex Awards 2007 competition. The winning entry was Seaweeds of Long Island Sound, a 104-page lavishly illustrated nature guide to the large algae. The competition is run annually by Communications Concepts, Inc., a group of editors and publishers who offer professional services for evaluating and improving business publications. The competition is open to businesses and nonprofits. Nearly 5,000 entries were submitted for the competition, of which about 20% received awards after judging by a panel of five professionals. According to the judges, awards were “based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence”. The book is jointly published by Connecticut Sea Grant at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus, and the Connecticut College Arboretum in New London, Connecticut. The book was funded by a grant from the U.S. EPA Long Island Sound Study and the Connecticut College Arboretum. It is free to K-12 teachers and is also available to the public from Connecticut Sea Grant.
An article published in CTSG's Wrack Lines magazine also placed in the Apex Award competition. An Award of Excellence in the Feature Writing category went to "The Venture Adventure" by Nancy Steenburg and Elizabeth Kading. The article was published in Wrack Lines Vol. 6 Number 1, Spring/Summer 2006. The article is an account of the search UConn historians undertook to learn about the life of 18th century slave-turned-property owner, farmer, and sea captain, during the part of his life spent in Stonington, Connecticut, at what is now the State of Connecticut's Barn Island coastal reserve.
